What triggers a winter weather alert?
The Bureau of Meteorology issues a severe weather warning for winter when sustained winds reach 90 km/h or gusts hit 125 km/h, or when snow accumulations exceed 10 cm in lowland areas. In the alpine regions, a blizzard warning applies if winds exceed 70 km/h with snow reducing visibility below 100 metres for at least three hours. Frost warnings are issued when minimum temperatures are forecast to drop below 2°C over large areas, posing risk to crops and infrastructure.
How to prepare for winter weather alerts
When a warning is issued, secure outdoor items, avoid travel through alpine passes, and check road closures via the state transport authority. In frost-prone areas, protect pipes and sensitive plants. Snow accumulations can block roads, especially between 500 m and 1200 m elevation. Stay updated with BOM’s three-hourly synoptic charts and the 10-day forecast for trend shifts.
Do winter weather alerts apply to cities like Sydney or Melbourne?
Yes. Sydney and Melbourne can receive wind or frost warnings when conditions meet thresholds. Sydney’s winter hazards are mainly strong southerly winds and coastal swell, while Melbourne may have damaging westerlies and occasional frost in outer suburbs.
How is a blizzard warning different from a snow warning?
A blizzard warning requires sustained winds of at least 70 km/h and snow reducing visibility below 100 m for three hours. A snow warning only indicates forecast snow accumulation, often with lower wind speeds. Blizzards are exclusive to the alpine resorts and mountain passes.
Can I travel through the Snowy Mountains during a winter alert?
